Local History & Genealogy

The McPherson Public Library maintains an unequalled collection of resources which tells the story of our city and the many people who settled it, developed it, or appeared as its citizens.

Newspapers -- Our collection of newspapers on microfilm encompasses all existing copies of some 19 papers which were published in McPherson, from the settlement of the city in 1872 to the present.

McPherson History Archives -- The archive of newspaper clippings, monographs, and other documents, preserves the written record of McPherson history.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps -- The Sanborn Company published detailed maps of cities and towns which included notations of businesses, public buildings, and many residences.  We have microfilm copies of all McPherson maps published by the company from 1887 to 1927.

McPherson County Atlases -- Watch the city take shape through these early plat records from 1884, 1887, 1921, and one from 1969.

Kansas Collection -- Our collection of books about Kansas and Kansas history includes many titles written about McPherson or the county, as well as many more having direct importance to the city.

Census Records -- Census records are a treasure trove of information for both historians and genealogists.  We maintain a comprehensive collection of federal and state census records on microfilm for McPherson County.  Federal Census:  1870, 1880, 1900, 1920, and 1930.  State Census:  1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925.

Obituary Index -- This guide contains over 14,000 entries, indexed by name and death date, of persons who died in McPherson and the surrounding area, from 1872 to the present.

Heritage Quest Online -- This online service, available at the library or from home with a Kansas Library Card, provides complete census records for the United States from 1790 to 1920.  Searchable in many different ways, it includes facsimiles of the handwritten census enumeration pages which may be printed or saved.  It also includes the full text of thousands of local and family histories.

Heritage Quest Research Service -- Library patrons who are computer-challenged -- or simply don't like to use them -- may fill out a form and let library staff do the research for them.

Genealogy and Local History Queries -- Queries for information may be submitted via email to research@macpl.org or by post at 214 W. Marlin, McPherson, KS  67460.  The library charges a research fee of $5.00, if successful, which includes copying and postage.
