Library Assistant

The McPherson Public Library is searching for someone who values libraries and loves working with people of all ages for the full-time position of Library Assistant.  As part of our service desk team, this person is instrumental in assisting library patrons in a variety of ways.

If you have a broad background, are accurate, team-oriented, and have demonstrated skills in Internet and computer functions, this position may be the one for you!  It includes some evening and occasional weekend hours.

Job Description - Library Assistant (Full Time)

The purpose of this position is to provide service to a diverse community of library users.  As a member of the service desk staff, the person in this front-line position is instrumental in forming our patrons' first impressions of the library.  This position also encompasses responsibilities in book repair and technology maintenance.

Hours
Full Time, including evenings and weekend hours.

Reports to
Head of Adult Services

Responsibilities include
Works effectively as part of the service desk team.
Checks out and checks in library materials.
Shelves books, magazines, and other library materials.
Processes new and renewal patron registrations.
Provides reference assistance.
Assists patrons with reserve and interlibrary loan requests.
Assists patrons in using the catalog, databases, and other library technology.
Assists with book repair and collection maintenance.
Assists with routine maintenance on library website and public internet terminals.
Assists with writing, editing, and formatting content for the library newsletter and
Facebook page.
Supervises any pages on the evening or weekend shifts.
Checks and straightens an assigned section of the collection.
Opens and closes the building according to schedule.
Other duties and projects as assigned by the Head of Adult Services.

Responsibilities assigned on a rotating basis
Maintains paperback and special display areas.
Monitors circ supplies and inventory.
Enters rotating collection data on the system.
Enters patron registration data on the system.
Generates and prints reports and mailings.
Maintains community events area and bestseller lists.
Maintains the periodical collection.
Assists with adult programming.

Minimum Educational Requirements
An A.A. degree or equivalent coursework from an accredited college or university. 

Physical Ability Requirements
The position requires the physical ability to:
1)  Push a loaded book cart weighing up to 250 pounds.
2)  Reach, bend, or stoop to reach library materials on shelves.
3)  Use manually operated office tools and supplies (scissors, stapler, etc.).
4)  Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
5)  File and sort items in accordance with established procedures based on alphabetic or numeric coding.
6)  Use computer keyboards and read video display terminal screens.
7) Perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.
8) Stand/walk for extended periods of time.
